Centrifuge embankment modelling

As part of the TAILLIQ project, we will be carrying out centrifuge tests on model embankments. These tests are to better understand some aspects of static liquefaction triggering, propagation of failure, and comparison to detailed laboratory test programs on the same materials. We recently completed a trial test to assess how our equipment was working and provide information on future models. While the purpose of the test was primarily to assess our equipment, we were able to trigger a small failure through rising phreatic surface in a sand (CSD path). Triggering agreed reasonably well with predictions made based on laboratory testing.

Below are photographs of the model preparation and testing, along with a video of the initiation of failure. Note how rapidly the failure initiates under a slow phreatic surface rise. While a major flow slide did not occur, this was likely primarily a result of the downstream rigid boundary of the model container – this particular test was only focused on initial triggering and testing of our equipment.

Thanks to Adam Stubbs and the entire NGCF team for their support in our testing program (http://www.ngcf.edu.au/).
